Kathmandu: Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, has announced that the country’s national elections will be held in February 2026.

In an address to the nation marking the first anniversary of the July uprising, Yunus said he had already sent a formal letter to the Election Commission requesting preparations for the polls in February.

The Nobel laureate economist was sworn in as head of the interim government on August 8, 2024, following political upheaval that led President Mohammad Shahabuddin to dissolve parliament on August 6, 2024.

The announcement comes as Bangladesh prepares for the holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to begin on February 17 or 18, 2026.
